An offbeat food & art tour in Bangkok’s oldest neighborhood:
Located on the west side of the Chao Phraya River, the narrow alleyways and meandering canals of Thonburi were around when modern ‘Bangkok’ was little more than rice paddies and orchards. Defined by old stilted wood homes, fantastic food, colorful markets and friendly, often artsy locals, Thonburi is an inspiring, hidden side of Bangkok that most foreigners never get the chance to experience.
Itinerary:
We’ll start at 9:00 AM with a public river-boat ride up the Chao Phraya River. After a peek at Wat Arun, we’ll stroll into a low key neighborhood to sample a range of Thai foods that are hand-made by local residents. These include boat noodles, fresh rice paper rolls, an icy coconut dessert and more. We’ll also stop by to see a family who have been producing a Thai specialty, candied bael fruit, for over 70 years. Then we’ll explore a local wet market, eat some more, and learn all about fresh Thai spices, fruit, chili paste and other ingredients. The next stop is a maze of alleyways where bronze-smiths have crafted traditional bowls by hand since the 1700s.
Next, we’ll cruise to one of Bangkok’s best kept secrets: a laid back artist village with century-old teak wood houses perched along a canal. We’ll enjoy some of the best noodle dishes and traditional sweets in Thailand, peruse intimate, non-touristy art galleries and enjoy a performance by a local puppet troupe.* Finally, we’ll stop by a historic but hidden temple where you can find out your fortune.
*Note that while we always check the puppet troupe’s schedule, they occasionally cancel the show last minute and we have no control over this. However, the artist village is well worth exploring regardless.

9:00 AM at Saphan Taksin BTS sky train station, exit 2.
*If you’re staying in the Khao San Road area, we can meet you at Phra Athit Express Boat pier.

We also offer pick-up service at most locations in Bangkok for 250 baht one-way. For this, we use public transport as Bangkok’s traffic can be a nightmare.
Price:
1,600 Baht per person for groups of 2 or more. For 1, the cost is 2,000 baht. Half price for children under 12. Free for toddlers under 4.
